The Mews is a character cottage in Ambleside in the Central Lake District. This former coachman's cottage and stables sits on the banks of the River Rothay. Once home to Queen Victoria's physician and later a local artist, the property underwent contemporary renovation. It stands about one mile from Ambleside town centre with views of the Fairfield horseshoe.

The location is peaceful and rural. A babbling brook runs opposite the property. You can walk straight from the garden onto footpaths leading to Loughrigg Fell. Ambleside is a short stroll away. Grasmere sits 4.4 miles distant and Windermere 4.7 miles.

The cottage sleeps six across two floors. The master bedroom has a king size bed with a luxury Victorian en-suite featuring a roll top bath and separate walk-in shower. Bedroom two offers a king size bed. Bedroom three contains twin beds. A slate bathroom with shower over bath serves the house. There's a ground floor cloakroom too.

Nearby you'll find Badger Bar within walking distance. Grasmere (4.4 miles, 10 minutes) offers shops and cafes. Windermere (4.7 miles, 12 minutes) has lake cruises and attractions. Keswick lies 16.7 miles away.

The Mews is a lovely property situated in an idyllic position, we had a wonderful stay,and would return. Just a couple of niggles The cottage would benefit from a deep clean behind beds and furniture etc The bedding and towels are tired The TV has a black line across it These are only points to give it 5star rating

Wonderful location and well equipped holiday cottage. Only issue we had, and it wasn't a week of great weather in May, was that the hot water was warm at best and the heating not very effective, although it wasn't cold by any means. However we would certainly seriously consider returning.

What a lovely cottage this is! We were there for a week and it was great! Comfy, clean and peaceful! Very peaceful!!!! Could not recommend it any more!

We know the accommodation well, having stayed on several previous occasions. It is well equipped and extremely well located with an idyllic outlook over the river and several stunning walks on the doorstep. However,the standard of cleaning was not good. A lot of dust and cobwebs and the toilet in the main bathroom was not very clean. The Dyson hoover was full of dust and clogged up with hair. The WiFi was very poor which we were expecting but it is increasingly an inconvenience. The TV had an intermittent problem with a black band across the screen. This could usually be solved by turning off at the mains. The heating was complicated to understand and difficult to control. Sorry about the negatives overall however, we loved our two weeks at The Mews.

We loved this house so much. the location is just perfect and it's clean, warm and comfortable inside. our children loved the stepping stones and climbing on the little boulders opposite the house. the garden isn't massively toddler and dog friendly as it isn't secure and is steep and rocky in places but with so much beautiful outdoor space right outside your door that really didn't matter. we booked again

We visit the lakes most years, but this location is our favourite to date. Dipper, duck and treecreeper watching on the river just outside was a real treat, and the day it poured was filled with bird watching. Rydal water and Doras field on the doorstep, and the badger bar was really good even if the badgers didnt put in an appearance! Short drives to the Langdale, Ulswater and Windermere Holehird Gardens a new find fabulous views, and lovely planting by the friendly volunteers. The cottage itself was really warm and comfortable, although a shame no logs were provided paying extra to request in advance, or an honesty box would be a real plus. We cooked three times kitchen well equipped, and a lovely big table to sit around. If you do fancy eating out cant recommend Lanty Slees in Ambleside highly enough, and for a real treat The Drunken Duck at Outgate is very special. Also had a delicious Thai takeaway from Doi Internon in Ambleside.

Very well managed property, everything works and there are a full instructions available. Just three points to raise, 1, we were unable to find the flood barrier board for the front door, fortunately we did not need it I was just aiming to be ready should the river have overflowed. 2. The cutlery holder in the dish washer has some sharp edges at the bottom, probably caused by people putting knives in sharp edges down, the sharp edges at the bottom of the cutlery container caused a minor cut to a finger, so maybe it is time to get a new cutlery container for the dish washer. 3. Overall there is an excellent number and range of cutlery, however there is a deficit of teaspoons, half a dozen would meet most circumstances. When we arrived the property was actually quite cold and it took us several days to master the controls, the underfloor heating during our first visit worked extremely well, however on this visit it only appeared to work intermittently rarely reaching 20. Overall a lovely property well managed and a great place to relax.

We had a lovely family week at the Mews. The accommodation was great and the location of the property was perfect. Lovely walks from the door into Ambleside, Grasmere and up the hills and an easy bus ride back if we needed it. The bubbling river opposite the house was a joy! The kitchen is well equipped so cooking for 6 was easy. The downside was that there was barely enough dishwasher tablets, loo roll, bin liners or any form of cleaning spray, and no broom. We ended up having to buy stuff up there towards the end of the week, which I find annoying. Just a bit more of that would have been gratefully received! The bath towels are also very small!! The carpet in the main bedroom was badly moth eaten and I feel it needs replacing as it felt grubby and no one wants to bring moths home in their knitwear! Other than that it was all good, so thank you for letting us use your house.

Fantastic property in an ideal place. Very comfortable good quality furnishings, excellent bedding made it an excellent stay. We highly recommend the cottage and lake lovers service. Will definitely try and book again soon.

Excellence facilities within a beautiful part of the world.

Amazing property in a fabulous location , a stay is highly recommended ,certain areas of cleaning and maintenance could be improved , cobwebs need cleaning & 2no lights to ensuite not working , internet connection was quite poor also tv has a blue line across the screen , none of these things spoiled our stay , just making everyone aware of these issues , also no visitors book to write a review . Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful location and a very well presented property with all the extra that make for a perfect break. Kitchen is excellent for anyone who wants to cook that special holiday meal. Large on suit to main bedroom excellent walk in shower. Parking for 2 cars was very good. We couldnt find a single fault.

The Heating in the Master bedroom really does need some attention. It would appear that the radiator in the master bedroom does not have a Thermostat, the result being that the room is either very warm 24 degrees or very cold, as the only way that it could be adjusted was by using a spanner to turn the radiator on or off. On the basis that this can be easily rectified it is not necessary to publish this part of the survey.

The photos do not do justice to how perfect the cottage is. It has everything you could want and more. It is warm, clean and quite luxurious. The views and the peaceful location are fabulous. The history of the cottage is fascinating and the owners and made a lovely job of modernising it with an amazing kitchen, snug lounge, bright bedrooms with comfortable beds and lovely bathrooms. None of us wanted to leave. And we are looking forward to returning. Thank you for a really memorable family holiday.

We absolutely loved everything about it! Even the weather was brilliant. There was a power cut mid week across the area that affected the WiFi for 2 days but apart from that we had a really fantastic stay

The cottage was absolutely beautiful and amazing location for what I required for a family get together especially with 2 small children and a golden retriever. We are big walkers and only 1 14mile stroll into Ambleside was perfect then the opposite way a 4 12mile walk to Grasmere either along the lake or up higher for more adventure. The Badger Bar was a short walk from the cottage with great food, friendly staff and outside garden area to enjoy. The cottage was so spacious but relaxing having all windows looking over a babbling brook and open fields with sheep made it idyllic. Cannot wait to return and please do not let this little piece of heaven slip away as we found Our Happy Place

Very convenient location opposite a babbling brook and within easy walkingruncycling of Ambleside. Lovely walks to Grasmere via Loughrigg Fell and the Fairfield Horseshoe. Great facilities inside and out with charcoal BBQ and outdoor seating areas, perfect in the warm weather. Beds were comfortable, kitchen had the widest range of utensils and easily catered for the four of us. Just a short walk to the bus stop and Badger bar. On arrival we noticed it hadn't had a thorough clean, particularly the hallway, stairs and bedrooms. The kitchen and bathrooms were all very clean.

Fabulous cottage in a fantastic location and the house was very nicely decorated for Christmas. Only one slight criticism, the oven was far too small for six people which made cooking Christmas dinner a challenge. That aside, we would definitely stay again.

We found the beds were very comfortable, the house was incredibly clean and the kitchen had everything we needed for some cosy nights cooking in. We adored the house and its surroundings. The location is absolutely TOP Quiet location, but very close to Ambleside. The house is extremely well equipped. The wood burner is fantastic. Nice pub nearby if you don't like to cook on foot The Wifi in the cottage is terribly slow. We did not like the bed at all, as one moves, the other one moves along. The couch in the living room in front of TV is not as comfortable as we hoped it would be after a long walk.

We are regular visitors to Ambleside, so we knew the location of this property and that it was nearly one mile out of town. It was so peaceful and the walk into town so enjoyable alongside the streamriver. The cottage and equipment were all of a high standard and the owner had certainly an eye for what is needed and also quality. The mews is spacious and well laid out with everything you may need especially the kitchen. We would definitely return and thank the owner for that extra level of love that has been put into the cottage.

Generally very good property in rural location. Well equipped. A few bad points, lighting is poor especially downstairs were it was dark. Central heating was difficult to use and regulate, living room cold. Moths were a big problem, have to spray regularly to kill them. The vacuum cleaner had not been emptied for a long time, it was absolutely blocked and I emptied the bag myself. The water collecting bottle on the tumble dryer was also full on arrival and stopped the dryer working, again I had to fix this myself. These items should be picked up by the Maintenance Change over teams.

A fabulous cottage in a fabulous location. We had family visit to help celebrate my sister and brother in laws 40th wedding anniversary and the large kitchen and open plan living space was ideal to accommodate us all for the day. Walks from the door and a lovely stroll into Ambleside for cafes, bars and shops. We were lucky with the weather and even enjoyed the snow covered scenery as we departed. Thanks to the Lakelovers for sorting some issues we had with heating and water supply, all sorted with no disruption to our holiday. We would like to thank the owners for sharing such a fabulous cottage, we really enjoyed our stay.

Have stayed here before the property has been brightened up since we last stayed . The only issue was the showers they were a bit hit and miss pressure and temperature wise.

What a stunningly beautiful cottage in an amazing location, to look out of the window and see the river and the Fairfield horse shoe behind, I cannot fault this Cotage, we had some rain but that didnt stop us its the lakes at the end of the day, would go back here in a heart beat.

It was our fifth visit to a well loved property. This time we had difficulty with the heatinghot water. We couldn't get the heating to come on in the morning upstairs although we could manually switch on downstairs. The hot water only came on if we had switched on the heating downstairs. There was only one tea towel for the week. I suggest another plus a kitchen hand towel. The new kitchen is well equipped but the nonstick pans are badly scratched. We still had a wonderful stay and will be back!

This is our third stay at The Mews and we look forward to coming back. The house was spotlessly clean upon arrival with all needed facilities in superb working order. The bathroom showers were wonderfully comfortably with hot water flowing at all times. The kitchen could not be more wonderfully complete. Thank you to the owners and especially to Joyce the cleaner for presenting us with such a lovely holiday home for our two week stay this year.
