For Couples
Fairy Glen works better for groups than couples due to its size. The property sleeps 10 across five bedrooms, making it too large for a romantic getaway. Fairy Glen Reviews

Really fantastic space loads of floors and space for a big family to spread out. Amazing with 2 kitchens, however I would reccomend maybe an extra fridge or a bigger fridge. Thats the only slight downside! Location is amazing, just a 5 min walk into Grasmere and a pub at the top of the road which was really great. Having so many bathrooms was great and the house was very clean. Would recommend! X

Fairy Glen, Grasmere Wonderful Family Stay We had a lovely family stay at Fairy Glen. The house had plenty of room for six adults and felt spacious and comfortable throughout. The openplan kitchen and dining area was perfect for spending time together, and we really enjoyed cooking in the wellequipped kitchen. There was also a plentiful supply of hot water, which meant nobody ever had to endure a cold shower. The beds were comfortable and, apart from a few cobwebs, the house was very clean. Overall it felt very welcoming and well suited to a family gathering. The location is fantastic. There are several pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance, and countless beautiful walks straight from the house. We particularly loved The Jumble Roomthe food was terrific. Its only open at weekends, so wed highly recommend booking a table in advance. We also had a great Sunday lunch at The Swan Inn, which was excellent value. For days out, Dove Cottage is definitely worth a visit, and the spa and afternoon experience at The Daffodil Hotel was great value if you fancy a bit of pampering. We also took the opentop bus to Keswick, the scenery was spectacular and bus timetable very good, making it easy to leave the car behind. A boat trip on Lake Windermere was another highlight of the week. The only thing we missed out on was visiting Allan Bank, as it was closed during our staybut that just gives us another reason to come back! We will definitely book Fairy Glen again and highly recommend it for a family stay in Grasmere.
This was a 60th birthday weekend with 4 generations of the family enjoying Fairy Glen. We were blown away by what the accommodation had to offer, the space, the views and the grandkids favourite ... the room with the well. Great socialising space, amazing kitchen and just a 5 minute walk up to the pub or 10 stroll into the middle of Grasmere. Will definitely be rebooking. Thanks, I & J
We had a wonderful stay at Fairy Glen. The majority of all facilities were great. There was a problem with the heating which bangs really loudly. This was loud enough to wake guests throughout the night.Another idea would be to move the side dresser out of the dining area of the kitchen as theres not enough room to get around the dining table when people are sitting at it. A side dresser isnt really important for a short stay.
Property ideal for a get together. Good space, dining table, lounge and good location. However the property is dirty and needs a deep clean. Cobwebs and spiders, blocked showers so the water was overflowing in the tray. Every cup, plate, glass and piece of cutlery was dirty. The main oven was a bio hazard, absolutely filthy! You need to improve, we wouldnt book again.

We enjoyed a super week at Fairy Glen. The cottage is perfectly located and within a short stroll of the centre of Grasmere. We loved the location and the space the cottage has to offer, particularly with teenagers in tow. The sociable dining and kitchen area is fantastic and very well equipped. Really enjoyed being able to walk directly from the cottage. Recommend the walk to Easedale Tarn and the ascent of Helvellyn, via Dollywagon Pike etc is a very good walk with plenty of streams and Grisedale Tarn for the dog! Highly recommend the Yan for dinner and Lucias in the centre of Grasmere. Excellent coffee and sandwiches. A lovely week and we hope to stay again.
Lovely, characterful and tastefully decorated house in a great position with very well equipped kitchen and spacious and comfortable accomodation for our family of 10. It could only be improved by the inclusion of a ground floor cloakroom for guests with compromised mobility for whom stairs are doable but not with the greatest of ease. The beautiful view of the nearby fells from our bedroom is all but lost by the Leylandii hedge which has now grown too high could it could be trimmed down? We ate at Lewis's in Grasmere and can highly recommend it for great food, also breakfast at The Yan just up the road. Thank you for a great stay, we have already booked for next year
Nicola
We had a great holiday. A lovely place to stay, a good location, very well equipped kitchen. The ensuite bedrooms with comfy beds and great views made the stay perfect. The enclosed garden for our little dog was ideal. Three generations enjoyed their stay with walks of all levels on the doorstep.
Louise
Fairy Glen is in the perfect location for amazing views, walks into town and the local pub. The kitchen is very well equipped and bedrooms are comfortables. A lovely house we will definitely be back!
Georgina
Ive never been to a holiday rental property before that didnt have the basics such as cleaning products washing up liquid! , no basic cooking facilites such as salt, pepper, oil, foil, sugar. It was really poor. The mattresses werent comfortable for most of the guests and the high chair was caked in food. Shame because the property itself was in a good place and its a nice property.
This was our second stay at Fairy Glen and our week was as magical as the first time. We were blessed by fine autumnal weather and had a fabulous stay. The house is delightful and well equipped and the location is superb. It was great to be able to return to such a cosy base after a day out walking. We had a wonderful holiday with our children and grandchildren. The little ones loved exploring the garden and thought the 'secret fairyland' in the basement was great fun. We will be back.
Our stay at Fairy Glen was to celebrate a 60th birthday and I have to say the cottage absolutely made the celebrations unforgettable. We have stayed in many parts of the Lake District over the years and have booked cottages in and around Grasemere but hands down this is the best we have had. From the excellent location, less than 10 mins from the centre of Grasemere, to the fantastic decor and facilities. Great kitchen area for cooking and dining for 10 and with most rooms, which are all beautifully decorated, having onsuites it made the stay perfect. I would not hesitate to recommend this cottage to anyone and will be booking it again for next year. Good food at the swan 4 min walk and Tweedies bar 10 min walk also cant recommend highly enough the Jumble room restaurant with a fabulous Asian fusion menu booking absolutely necessary. We had two dogs with us and the enclosed garden was perfect. Great base for walks of all levels, go stay and enjoy the lakes!
A beautiful large house, with great views, great amenities, very well positioned in Grasmere, ideal for family gatherings. We stayed in September '24, the gardens are well maintained, secluded and dog safe. Offroad parking was easy and convenient. The house is beautiful and retains its Victorian features. We found the beds were very comfy. The kitchen is well appointed with a range style oven, a microwave and a slow cooker, plus a second modern oven in rear utility area, a full sized fridgefreezer, washing machine and separate dryer. Ample space for coats and boots. A 2 minute walk down to the village takes you to a well stocked, friendly Coop store and a range of local independent shops and cafes, while 2 minutes up the road is the The Swan pub. Good local bus route links to surrounding towns inc. Ambleside, Windemere, Keswick. The cellar is beautiful, containing a unique spring water well feature keys appropriately hung above the door out of reach from children. Lots of useful local information provided in sideboard drawers local events, attractions, bus timetables, along with Ordnance survey maps, and guides for walks, cycling, motoring, whatever you need. Thank you for a lovely holiday, will come again.

Lovely cottage but could be improved with a few tweaks I had a few questions before the trip which although responded to were not accomodated. It would be more flexible if at least one of the doubles was able to be a twin. A bbq would be good and better outdoor seating especially in garden Property could do with updating as some seating, furnishings are worn we loved the location and the cottage itself especially proximity to The Swan.
Fairy Glen was a great location for our diverse party which included a young child, adults over 70, and a dog. The space and facilities were good, the kitchendining room lovely, and the beds were comfortable. However, the property felt somewhat neglected, and could do with a fortnight of sensitive maintenance. On the top floor, there was split in the floorboard with a sharp edge and a 3cm gap, poorly installed rooflight handles, blinds with hanging cords which posed a strangulation risk, and lots of dusty cobwebs even between the bedside lamp and the wall, suggesting not a very thorough cleaning had taken place. There were passiveaggressive signs displayed which suggested that previous shower leaks were due to negligent visitors, whereas in fact the sealant was black with mould, indicating a lack of proper maintenance. The presumably very absentee owner also needs to check the wooden window sills as they look like they are about to collapse with rot in places. The garden was not dogsecure as advertised, as there were several places where the fence wire was squashed, and in one part was 'fenced off' with a broken garden bench resting across a gap. The other garden bench has a broken armback so had to be used with care. In summary, the house is not worth the current rate in its present condition, but we would stay again if it was half the price.
Thomas
We really liked staying at Fairie Glen. The location of the property and facilities in the house were very good and we had a good holiday. We would like to stay sometime again in the future but would appreciate more comprehensive instructions on how to use the central heating system. In particular it wasnt clear how to use the various controls on the downstairs thermostat and we had no hot water at the end of the week.
A lovely, beautifully decorated and comfortable house with good access to Grasmere village and the Swan Inn for our evening meal. Lovely views from the front bedroom windows and plenty of room for our family to spread out. Highly recommended, thank you
Lovely, well located, house to stay in although could do with a thorough clean to keep the many spiders at bay! Our biggest problem was the heating, 27c on arrival & unable to turn it down. Took until Monday to get someone out to look at it, managed to drop it to 21.5c but it soon kicked in again! Luckily the weather turned colder so was more bearable.
Robert
Nice house, but. .. None of the heated towel rails in the 4 ensuites worked. In particular, for a house that is mostly going to be rented by people rambling during the day, it's nice to come back to dry towels. There is a screw sticking out of the large bench in the front garden. This should be delt with immediately as it could cause injury and damage to clothing.
Perfect! Beautiful place, great location, well stocked
Gillian
The house is lovely but not super clean and worn in places. I had expected things like hand soap in the bathrooms, but overall it was a good base and I would book again
William
Fairy Glen was superb. Each room were perfect and a lot of thought has gone into the facilities. We have booked again for New Year. William Ash
A fantastic home from home property in the heart of Grasmere. A well appointed place with plenty of space to enjoy an extended family holiday. Walks from the door and excellent choice of eateries locally to round off the day.
Fairy Glen is in a great location and has loads of space. It was helpful having so many bathrooms too. However, many of the reviews before are correct that the property is in need of some TLC especially when reflecting on price and similar properties. This didnt impact our stay aside from the heating which is unworkable once on and the lounge becomes like an oven! The gaps in floorboards is odd especially in one of the ensuites where you inevitably drip water on the floor and therefore through the gaps. I get it that the property is old but some flooring would make more sense as noise anywhere in the house reverberates around. As the property is dog friendly, allowing guests to take the back door key out may make more sense as this means a dirtywet dog can more easily come in this door and stay there until dry.
Nicola
A super holiday home in a great location !
Fairy Glen would have been an ideal place to stay in Grasmere, had it not been for i The central heating was on at a very high level 25C and non of the thermostats or radiator controls worked. ii The window pane in the lounge was cracked and therefore we could not open this to try and cool the room. iii We had to spend an extortionate amount of time during the week trying to resolve these issues. We were so lucky that the local maintenance team who came to replace the outside garden seat tried their best to also resolve this problem, albeit this took a further couple of days. I am surprised that we were confronted with these issues during our holiday week and really resulted in a less than satisfactory experience. This premium rated property should be maintained at an appropriate level reflecting the rate charged. Unfortunately this experience will probably result in us not choosing Sykes Holiday Cottages for a subsequent holiday. Regretfully yours sincerely Colin and Mair Decker
Elizabeth
Very tired house. Dead flowers not welcoming in garden. Needs some TLC.
Thomas
Lovely house with good amenities. Good to have most rooms with ensuite and showers which were of good standard. Great location for walks and conveniently close to the Swan inn. Would like to stay here again.
Charles
A very comfortable and well maintained holiday cottage with a well stocked kitchen. Sykes have really made a good job of addressing maintenance issues raised in previous reviews. The layout of the house works well for a group of friends and the location is fabulous for some challenging walks. The village is virtually on the doorstep and some lovely local walks including around Grasmere and Rydal Lakes are easily accessible. We stayed at Fairy Glen for a week to celebrate my birthday with friends and the bespoke caterers Cumbrian Chef who we also highly recommend www.thecumbrianchef.co.uk catered for 2 evening meals. They also commented that the kitchen was very well stocked.
We've hired the house 4 times since 2019 and we feel that parts of it are starting to feel a little bit tired now. Some of the taps are loose and the sink in the top floor bathroom is coming away from the wall. The shower doors all apparently leak but instead of being fixed, there is just a note to inform guests that the doors leak. A little bit of maintenance would make the place feel a bit fresher. Otherwise, we love the property and would like to return in future.
We do like Fairy Glen and stayed several times as in good location, has 5 bedrooms, parking for 3 cars and allows dogs and the family love staying here. A coffee maker would be ideal in the kitchen, and a little TLC may be needed to keep property updated. We were there when weather was windy and this caused drafts from bedroom windows on first floor. It a shame there only 1 bath which is in the top bedroom, which has limited headroom, it would be ideal if bathroom on first landing could have a bath in that bathroom so a bath is more accessible. We used the travel cot and the mattress was not ideal, we had to use a quilt to make it more comfortable to use. There was always a nail that came up on the floorboards in the dining room which is not ideal so avoid that as you enter the dining room ! We do love Fairy Glen and would stay here again.
We had a fantastic stay at Fairy Glen, excellent house for multi generational stay with all the bedrooms and bathrooms. The location is amazing with fabulous walks right from the door, great access to the lovely village, park and football field and the excellent bus service right on the doorstep. We visit the Lakes frequently and this is by far our favourite house and location. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
Richard
Fairy Glenn needs some major TLC. Many of the electrics didnt work or needed new bulbs the shower drains need cleaning as filled up and nearly overflowed every use. The bath was difficult to get in and out of and top floor bedroom beams were dangerous. The kitchen was poorly stocked and floor boards meant returning with holes in our socks as they need maintaining. Heating very noisy during the night and none of the remote controls had working batteries. Kitchen needs an extractor fan as fire alarm triggered frequently and exterior bin needs collecting at start of stay as we had to store rubbish bags in the house until collected on Thursday as bin full at start of our week. No mention in advertising of busy main road to Grasmere right next to the property as this was noisy, double decker busses waiting outside made you feel on view.
Jackie
Lovely house for a family get together.
Very comfortable and warm. A great place to stay and socialise with friends
Great week at Fairy Glen, perfect base for the Lake District and handy location for short walk into Grasmere Village. House comes with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Well equipped kitchen, with all mod cons. Good sized bedrooms, with all doubles ensuite. Very convenient location with bus stop across the road, for 555 service south to AmblesideWindermereKendal, and Keswick to the north. Definitely recommend as a location to stay.
We really enjoyed our stay at Fairy Glen. The accommodation was perfect for us in terms of location, size and quality of facilities at the property.
