About The Mounting Steps

The Mounting Steps is a characterful one-bedroom cottage set in a cobbled courtyard of an impressive manor house in Clappersgate, near Ambleside in the Lake District. The property takes its name from the original mounting steps once used by riders. Built into the hillside of Loughrigg Fell, this cottage offers breath-taking views over rooftops to the Lakeland fells from the top floor.

The location is perfect for exploring. Ambleside centre sits just a 10-15 minute walk away. The riverside garden across the road provides a peaceful spot to relax and listen to running water. Bus stops yards from the door connect you to Keswick, Coniston, Bowness and Kendal.

The cottage sleeps two guests across three floors. The ground floor houses a king-size bedroom with en-suite basin and WC plus a 40-inch smart TV. The middle floor features a cosy sitting room with electric wood-burning stove. The top floor holds a recently refurbished kitchen with integrated dishwasher, fridge-freezer and washer-dryer, plus a dining area. The main bathroom boasts an extended walk-in shower and separate bath.

Stock Ghyll Force waterfall sits nearby. The 17th-century Bridge House and National Trust Information Centre are in Ambleside. Lake Windermere at Waterhead offers cruises and watersports. Grasmere lies 4.4 miles away and Keswick 16.7 miles.

We had a lovely time at mountain steps it is a very comfortable house and very well equipped , it is our second visit and we will def be back again .

Accommodation was well kept, clean, comfortable and well equipped. As previous reviews have stated, it's over 3 floors so you will keep your step count up! 10 minute walk into town in one direction and 10 minutes in the other direction to the Lake where you can pick up one of the many boat tours or hire your own. Plenty of buses to take you all over the Lake District so you can leave the car behind. A bonus for us when we stayed was lovely weather! All in all, a very enjoyable week in pleasant surroundings and we will definitely be back.
This property was exactly as promised. Every thing you need to self cater was provided. Ambleside centre with its shops pubs and resteraunts is just a twenty minute walk. The only thing which may prove a problem for some is the layout. It is over three floors and involves much stair climbing. We are both in our late seventies but quite fit but anyone less able may struggle.
Nicely furnished to a high standard. Very clean and well equipped. Pretty garden across the road from the property and useful bus stop just outside the courtyard. A very pleasant stay.
This was our second time at the Mounting Steps and we never stay anywhere more than once! It has everything we need, is cosy and comfortable, perfect location for walking and very quiet at night. The only thing wed like is a couple of trays!

What a lovely place. Nice location just out of ambleside, but a pleasant short walk in. Really well furnished, everything you need,, and a lovely courtyard with easy parking.
We had a relaxing stay at Mounting Steps. Lovely appointed holiday let away from the hustle & bustle. The cottage was clean with a comfortable bed & pillows. The kitchen had everything you needed for preparation & cooking. We very much enjoyed sitting at the table & looking out of the window at the view while eating breakfast & when in our evening meal. The big shower was lovely especially after some long walks. Lot's to do around the area, some lovely walks & places to explore &just a short walk into Ambleside. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Lovely cottage in a peaceful location but only a ten minute walk into Ambleside. Spotlessly clean and well equipped with all home comforts. Lovey riverside garden across the road where we spent a lovely sunny afternoon. Highly recommended.

A perfectly placed and beautiful cottage. It was extremely clean, comfortable and well cared for. The kitchen cupboards were well stocked, plenty of fridge and freezer space, a wonderful bathroom with relaxing bath and large shower. The bed was super comfy. Everywhere felt like home, we couldnt recommend highly enough. We were able to park directly outside the property which is an 10 min walk from Ambleside with a lovely walk in to pubs, shops and activities. Close to the lakes and lots of walks. It made our holiday perfect.
Very well equipped cottage with a lot of character. Great instructions from the owner and plenty of maps etc to plan our days out. Short walk into Ambleside where we could catch the buses. No need to use the car.
We had a wonderful time at The Mounting Steps. It was equipped with everything we could possibly need, was extremely comfortable and clean. The shower was lovely, always hot and powerful. The bed was extremely comfortable and night was very quiet. The maps and books were very handy. We loved that we could do all our walks from the door and leave the car most days. We've been coming to the Lakes every year for the last 25 years and this was the best property we have had. We are already looking to rebook in October!

The location was perfect and the price was fair. The cottage was lovely to stay in. As personal reference, some curtains in the bedroom would be nice as we found it to be quite light in a morning but other than that, we really enjoyed it and would definitely stay again.

What a fantastic find. After having been self catering for over 40 years this is one of the best weve stayed in.There was everything anyone could want.The property was clean and very comfortable.The actual location was ideal just a short 15 minute walk along the path towards Ambleside. Although we experienced wet weather this didnt deter us going out.The small garden across the road was a bonus.Where you could sit and admire the view. Plenty of places to eat and drink in Ambleside,you need to book when busy to guarantee your table if dining out. We will certainly be returning to the Mounting Steps soon.

We had a good time at The Mounting Steps. The place is comfortale and have everything you need. Location is great too. Ambleside centre town is within walking distance and you can access a private shared garden, across the road. Unfortunetly, we were not warned that scafolding were in place in both sides of the terrace house which result in construction noise but also no parking space as it wasn't safe to leave the car e.g. debris falling we were lucky to be able to park elsewhere in the courtward though. Overall, it was a good experience, the bathroom is perfect, it is worth climbing the steps after a long day hiking to enjoy a bath!

Loved the bathroom! !!! The shower was great! Really well equipped kitchen which you don't always get. Great time had by us.
Lovely cosy and comfortable accommodation to relax in after a long walk, bed very comfortable for a good night's sleep. From a personal view only, feel a big walk in shower would be more beneficial than the bath and small shower cubicle.
Very comfortable holiday home in an extremely convenient location. Just be ware the steps between flours are steep and a bit of a challenge at the end of a long day walking.

Generally everything was as expected, however, whilst ok for us 2 fairly fit people, older people would really struggle with the stairs & the dash across the road to the garden! Lovely property though!!
